2022 Montana Pro Rodeo Circuit Finalist Tayla Moeykens

Which horse(s) are you taking to the finals?
I will be taking Dash of Blue Sky aka “Blue" (2006 Sorrel Mare by BobbiesDashtoFame x Blue Sixes by Six Fortunes, California Bred), KN Fames Best Yet aka “Yeti” (2018 Gelding by Dash ta Fame x KN Fabulous N Khaki by Frenchmans Fabulous, Texas Bred), and “JM PocketsDoubleDash aka “Lizard” (2013 Brown Gelding by Guyspocketfullofcash x Katys Perks by Dash For Perks, Kansas Bred)

What is unique about their personality and what are their strengths? How tall are they and what is their weight (thought it would be fun to compare)? Blue and Lizard are a push style as I have to ride them square into the pocket. Yeti is more of a free runner. All three are very honest and love to run. Blue is very sassy and lets you know what she is thinking. Lizard is very sweet but has a spunky side. Yeti is a love and just wants as much attention as he possibly can get, however when you get on him, it's go time! Blue is around 15 hh and weighs about 1000 lbs. Lizard is around 15.2 hh and weighs about 1100 lbs. Yeti is around 16.1 hh and weighs about 1250 lbs.

When did you start competing in barrels? I started competing by myself at the age of 3.

How long have you been a WPRA member? I bought my permit in 2020 and 2021 was my Rookie year. This is my third year being a card member.

Do you raise your own horses? Or do you purchase? Are you looking for specific bloodlines? Blue came to us about 4 years ago and Lizard we've had since he was 6 months old. Yeti was a bit of a surprise this year as we were not planning on gaining a family member, but
we are very thankful we did. We love breeding such as Frenchmans Guy and Dash for Cash, etc.

What are your conditioning and workout routines for both you and your horse(s)? We mainly do conditioning exercises such as long trotting and drills. We work the pattern usually 2-3 times a week depending on if there is something we need to work on. For myself, I workout 2-3 days a week mainly focusing on core exercises.

When you're headed to the rodeo what do you listen to: inspirational podcasts, music, audio books? Mainly we have the radio playing, but I love to read or sleep while in the truck. We also listen to mentally toughening tapes.

What or who are you thankful for? I am thankful for my parents, Rick and Deena, who have given me everything, taught me all that I know, and are there for me through the ups and downs. I couldn’t do this without them.

Do you have favorite spots to stop at while on the road? We try to find places where we can turn the horses out to run and stretch their legs. Most of the time they stall next to the trailer where they are the most comfortable.

Who do you travel with (including pets or companion horses) and in what kind of rig? We have two dogs, Zeke and Blue, that go everywhere with us and sometimes JM LenasFrenchLady (Lately) will come along as well as a buddy/breakaway horse. We have a 4
Star Living Quarters and a F-350 dually.

What are your favorite memories/highlights and obstacles you faced getting to the 2023 circuit finals? The most exciting part about this year is coming into the Circuit Finals in the number 1 position. This was not what I expected as we had a 5 year old we just bought and are seasoning, Lizard who I had struggled to find a groove with, and Blue who had been hurt for the entire season. Taking this year run by run was the best strategy we could have had. Ironically, this was also the biggest challenge.

What are your hobbies or other sports you compete in? Rodeo, rodeo, and more rodeo. I also breakaway rope.
