Dear Barrel Racing Family,

Smarty passed away after Shelby’s barrel run in Eureka Friday night. We don’t know for sure what happened, but think it was a heart attack or stroke. Fortunately we were surrounded by our “rodeo family” and received an overwhelming amount of help and support.

I am still finding out about all the people who did something to help care for Shelby or Smarty or myself in so many different ways to help us through the experience. I am truly grateful for the rodeo community.

Rene Cloninger and Shelby Blixt

Here is a quiz for you horse pedigree fanatics. Ali MaCarty’s mare Shez Blowin No Smoke has the same sire as one of the WPRA NFR Qualifiers this past year. Who is it and what is her horse’s name? Send your answer to email@montanawpra.com

Hi Kitty. I think it is Kelli Tolbert on RF Firefly. The sire is Smoke N Sparks.

Donna Mitchell

Thanx that was fun.

Dear Equine Owners,

The Montana WPRA would like this opportunity to thank our sponsor,  Plains Horizon Equine Insurance.  The great vests from the Circuit Finals were sponsored by Horizon.  Many of us have had insurance with Marvin Tavarez Jr for a number of years and have been extremely satisfied with the coverage.

It really is very reasonable when you think of all the time and money you have invested in your partner.  It is around $97 for $3,000 and $200 for $6,000.…  Once you have lost one of those expensive horses, whether you raised it or not, there is evaluation.  It is a possibility for a lil consolation.  Just some thoughts.

If you are looking for equine insurance be sure and call Marvin a call 877-569-8960.

Thanks for your support Marvin!

Dear All WPRA Members,

I just wanted to thank all of you for the Sportsmanship Award. There are so many in our organization who deserve this award and with girls like all of you it is easy to be “sportsman-like.” A special “thank you” to John and Lois Hill for sponsoring this award and the beautiful bronze from Montana Silversmiths. We have lots of bronze barrelmen in our house, but no barrel racers, until now.

I would also like to thank the Circuit Finalists for voting me “Best Dressed” at the Circuit Finals. That was fun! And thank you to Tammy Thompson and the Arms family for sponsoring this award and for donating the beautiful Double J headstall. It is fun to have an incentive to “bling” it up a little.

I would like to extend a HUGE thank you to Lana Tibbetts and Maria Gee for all the amazing prizes that we received as finalists. And, of course, thank you to all the incredible sponsors; Steel, Etc., Basin State Bank, Plains Horizon Equine Insurance, Hill Quarter Horses, Montana Silversmiths, Dally’O, Woody’s Feed, Tammy Thompson, Dave and Donna Johnson, Three Forks Saddlery, Wrangler, Buster and Helen Brown, Classic Equine, Rayna Rice and the Cattle-lac, and Town Pump.

I would like to thank Kitty Herrin for her amazing presence behind the scenes, taking photos, offering support, holding horses and this amazing website.

And last, but certainly not least, a very special “thank you” to Charlotte Barry, who stood in for Maria and went well beyond the call of duty, keeping us organized, informed, and giving of her time to provide us with the most rewarding and fun experience possible at the 2010 Montana Circuit Finals.

I LOVE this Montana rodeo family and I look forward to seeing you all down the road in 2011.

With Deepest Gratitude,
Katie Rasmussen

I would like to thank all the Montana Circuit Finals girls for the beautiful Montana Silversmiths bracelet. I love it! You are a great bunch of girls and I think everything went pretty smooth. Thank you for making that happen. I wish you all the best of luck this next season. As my best friend used to tell before we ran “have a great time.”
Thank you Charlotte Barry

We will be posting answers to our quizzes about the 2010 Montana Circuit Finalists as they come in. This week we posted the question about how many circuit finalists horses have Dash For Cash on the papers? See our answers below.

I am going to go with 8. Katie Rasmussen, December 31

I knew the answer last year (which if I remember was 7)! But I'm going to guess 5. Rhonda Kountz,
December 30.

I am going to guess 6 – Theresa, Annie, Donna, Morgan, Julie and Deena. Thanks for the fun quizzes – not much else to do on these lovely cold winter days.

TAMMY NOVOTNY

The Billings Hat Trick was, of course, performed by the lovely and talented, Morgan Knudson and Cutie.  In fact, after tipping all three barrels she came out of the arena and WPRA Stock Contractor of the Year, Ike Sankey said, "Hey Morgan, you forgot the eyes!"

Katie R. (Morgan's travelling partner for this infamous trip). Sent via email December 17.

After my daughter, Annie, traveled with Katie Rasmussen we learned that her rig etiquette was the you could not run a faster barrel time than the person whose rig you were in (which was Katie’s).  It was all in fun and Katie has every bit of a great sense of humor as her husband. Great person.

P.S. As Annie’s mom I have to differ on the fact that she doesn’t like ice cream—it is actually just the opposite. It’s the only way I could get any dairy product in her as she does not like milk.

TAMMY NOVOTNY (via email December 14)

Proper rig etiquette is when you cannot beat the person who owns the rig. Rayna Rice will argue and say you just can’t beat the person who is driving. I am very good at following these rules, just ask Katie. (sent via email by Annie Novotny, December 13)
