Montana WPRA Recent News & Important Information

Hi!

This year at the Belt Rodeo (June 19-20) my family is going to give away a halter, made by Danyelle Campbell, in memory of our Dad Ray Nevala.

All of the barrel racers entered names will go in a hat and the “lucky Barrel Racer” will get this gorgeous halter.

You can check out Danyelle’s amazing tack at www.cloverdtack.com – Danyelle has graciously donated her time making this halter  Thank you Danyelle!!

The Belt Rodeo is celebrating its 50th year!! My Dad was one of the founding members of the “Little Belt” Rodeo committee.  50 years for the little town of Belt Montana is pretty amazing!! – Good luck to you all – hope the arena is dry and you all have great runs!!

Take care

To All Equine Owners:

I, Jill Miller, have become a distributor for Nutra-Lix supplements for horses! They have three great products for horses:

1. Nutra-Lix Plus (it is a liquid vitamin and mineral supplement)
2. Nutra-Lix Joint-Rite (is a liquid supplement that contains Glucosamine, MSM, Chrodroitin, Perna Mussel, Bromelain, and Grape Seed Extract)
3. 12% Solid Performance Equine Barrel (it has the majority of the same great nutrients of Nutra-Lix Plus but, in a solid format)

I have used all three products on my horses and they all look and feel awesome! I have a 6 year old gelding who was hot and nervous to ride. Since I have put him on Nutra-Lix Plus he is calmer and mentally ready to barrel race! I noticed results within the first month of use! Also, I have a 12 year old gelding that had stifle surgery last September and I have been feeding him the Nutra-Lix Plus and Nutra-Lix Joint-Rite. My vet could not believe how good he looks! I believe the Nutra-Lix Joint-Rite really made my horse recover from surgery faster than normal!

Nutra-Lix with their great performance products will be awarding product at all the WPRA permit only races held throughout the state.

If anyone is interested in putting their horses on these outstanding products or would like more information, please give me a call at 406-366-6200.

Dear WPRA members:

I am submitting a list of the great sponsors who are on board for the circuit finals and also to let you know what my responsibilities are as your Circuit Board Director.

We had great attendance this year. Unusually nice weather, improving the ease of ordering tickets, and above all a great event all had a part in making this year bigger and better. Thanks to our members for a great barrel race and for making this such a hot ticket with fast horses and overall class acts.

Calendar sales have been a part of our circuit that helps keep our payout the largest circuit finals payout. This rodeo in itself hit #15 in the PRCA rankings of payout per performance. All Top 12 sold their calendars; great job ladies. Mandy Hamilton sold a whopping 80 calendars and had her fees paid. I believe she was number one in contestants with this number. Other numbers sold include 54, 49, and 35; way to go!

Our rakers were Meghan Gee and Luke Gee Friday and Sunday, Carroll College rodeo team members. Saturday night (Anna, Erica, and Betsy), CMR high school seniors Katie and Rachel helping out on Sunday, and of course Willy Vietor throughout the weekend. My heart is thankful for people who are excited to be part of this event year after year.

Your circuit board meets for 2 full day meetings throughout the year as well as board meetings each day of the circuit finals and various phone conferences when needed. As your event director, I report each day on ground conditions, mark barrels, have worked each year to improve our alleyway and getting a fair start for each contestant. The board was able to purchase its own dirt to make possible the warm up arena and good conditions in the arena. We crunch numbers, provide liaison to rodeo committees mainly through Dave Wagner throughout the year and the committee breakfast during the rodeo. There are many people behind the scenes who believe in professional rodeo in this state. I am proud to deal with our sponsors and this organization. The list below is not all inclusive but is the portion I directly deal with.

Steel Etc. Jacket and saddle sponsor as well as fast time cash bonus each night.
Coors Gusto Dist. Barrel racing event sponsor
Classic Equine full set of front, hind, and bell boots to round winner each night; ESP blanket given as hard luck to Shelley Anzick
Three Forks Saddlery Horse of the Year headstall Theresa Walter
Brown Quarter Horses Horse of the Year breast collar Theresa Walter
Grizzly Saddlery Fast Time breast collar won by Annie Novotney
Town Pump gas card to each round winner
Basin State Bank Stanford, MT 59479 Rookie Buckle Annie Novotney
Willow Creek Construction Breakfast sponsor
Fuddrucker’s gift certificates for the rakers
Thanks to MT WPRA and Dally’O for additional raker gift certificates

The Latin root of compete means “to conspire together.” Let's continue to bring out the best in each other.

Sincerely,

Maria Gee

Dear Equine Owners,

The Montana WPRA would like this opportunity to thank our newest sponsor,  Plains Horizon Equine Insurance.  The great vests from the Circuit Finals were sponsored by Horizon.  Many of us have had insurance with Marvin Tavarez Jr for a number of years and have been extremely satisfied with the coverage.

It really is very reasonable when you think of all the time and money you have invested in your partner.  It is around $97 for $3,000 and $200 for $6,000.…  Once you have lost one of those expensive horses, whether you raised it or not, there is evaluation.  It is a possibility for a lil consolation.  Just some thoughts.

If you are looking for equine insurance be sure and call Marvin a call 877-569-8960.

Thanks for your support Marvin!

You know, sometimes you have very special things in your life and (if you are like me) you may save them for good.... Well that is what I did with my Merrill barrel saddle from Three Forks Saddlery for quite a period of time (4 years or more). Only used it for barrel racing and working my horse on the barrels. Well, this fall when I started a not so small 2 year old and 3 three year old, I decided, Lana “you have two of those saddles, now maybe you need to be using them more” and you are not 25.

Oh, I have always really liked my saddle. But, I’m here to tell you, I fell in LOVE with my Merrill Barrel saddle. It is like many things in life, you can get by with a lot. Although, when you have those situations where “things can really happen,” one needs to feel confident and capable to deal with the task as it may arise.

The Ground seat in the Merrill barrel saddle is what makes this saddle so unique. If you have ever had any riding lessons, you will recall “on your pelvic bone, in front, and behind your pelvic bone.” The Merrill keeps you so very centered and feeling close to your horse, it is amazing. For those of you who have broke colts, you know those first 5 rides can be a bit scary, and you’re not sure which direction you may be headed or stop suddenly. In the Merrill, your feet Never get behind you, which is very rare for most saddles.

If you are looking for a saddle this season, you need to check with Joe Petersen at Three Forks Saddlery (www.threeforkssaddlery.com).  You’ll see many WPRA members are riding these saddles and for several reasons. They aren’t just for great body position running barrels, they are a truly very comfortable saddle for any type of riding.

There is a Confidence that a saddle can give. Believe me, I had never truly realized how much the difference was it until this fall on those colts. If you are looking for a saddle this Christmas Season, check out one of the Merrill’s. You will not be disappointed. But don’t be like I was and save it, use that baby, you will have great confidence for all your types of riding.

Merry Christmas to you all!! Look forward to what you may have to share.

Sincerely, Lana Tibbetts

To all Montana WPRA members and friends,

On 8/22/09, as many of you know, I lost my horse Willie B Rockin due to colic.  I  received so many text messages, emails, phone calls, flowers, balloons, and cards.  I really appreciate everyone’s thoughtfulness and knowing that so many people care.  I want to thank all of you for your kind words and for thinking of me through this very difficult time.

Willie was so very special to me.  He was a gift that I got to enjoy and I cherish every run we made.  I want to thank Sue Smith for selling him to me and for her advice on how to ride him.  What a ride he gave me this past year!

It has been very difficult for me to sit down and type this because of the emotions involved thinking of Willie and accepting the fact that he is gone.  Again, thank you all so very much for your thoughts and prayers.

Hi all, it's Nancy Ward,

I would like to inform everyone about a benefit we are doing September 19th in Philipsburg. It is for nine year old Sydney Rae who is the daughter of Jody (Vietor) and Mike Cutler. She is Dave and Karen Vietor's granddaughter, Jason Vietor's niece and Carolynn and Willy Vietor's grandniece. She had a brain tumor removed in May and is currently undergoing cancer treatment.

Jason is putting on the 1st annual Head, Heel and Hope team roping and I am holding a "Are You Tough Enough" mountain bike, trail run/walk race event at our ranch. There will also be a huge BBQ and auction with big time items that same evening.

For more information on the benefit and to learn about Sydney Rae you can go to www.pintlarterritories.com or email me at marshallcrkrnch@blackfoot.net.

I hope everyone has had a safe and happy summer!

HELLO BARREL RACERS!

The 9th Annual Three Can Tango is set for September 25-27, 2009 at the Super Barn on the Yellowstone County Fairgrounds in Billings.

The event will be WPRA co-approved and kicked off with a PeeWee barrel race at 530 PM followed by a new jackpot on Friday night.

Saturday the 17 & Under WPRA approved will begin the event at 10:30 AM followed by the Open 3D; Sunday the Open 3D will begin at 8 AM following the Cowboy Church Service at 7 AM.
The Prize Round will feature the top 20 percent of each division following Sunday’s open competition.

The 3CT was initially approved as a WPRA lead event with limitations on the entries. After working with the WPRA it was converted to a Co-Approved event and will offer allow ALL entries including men and boys in both the open and youth races. All contestants will be covered by the WPRA insurance with non-member paying just a $5 insurance fee.

Entry blanks and complete information are available by clicking the link on the home page or www.threecantango.com or by calling 406-628-6456

I want to compliment all the WPRA members whom have set barrel patterns at the rodeos I've worked. You all are very professional and have been a pleasure to work with. Thank you.

I really want to thank Libbi, Jill, Deena, Wanda (and Rick) for setting the pattern in Scobey at the NRA / NWRA rodeo. That was really a "treat" to have that done. Way to step up and be leaders. It was a great barrel race there!

Respectfully,

I'd just like to comment on the  number of "Pink" nights at rodeos so far this year.

There seems to be a lot of them, it's awesome to think of wonderful results that are
happening with this event! I think it's incredible and support it every chance available,
and I'm proud to see how many of the men and women contestants join the support.
However if I can make a pro-active comment, a lot of the rodeo's have not been listed
as "Tough Enough" and so its hard to get there and not be prepared. Even more difficult
if you are hauling with someone, and didn't think to pack a Pink shirt, just in case.

I spoke to a committee person this past weekend and thanked them for all the efforts for the rodeo, the ground, and the 'cause'. I also asked if he knew how they get on the list for so the contestants can be made aware of pink nights. He told me it was short notice, but their plan for the future was to just plan that all of their rodeos on Saturday nights would be pink. I offered if someone from the committee could let any of the barrel racers know, we could use the our Montana site to post which rodeo's are pink and pass the word to other contestants. He wasn't even aware the Montana woman had a site, and thought it would be great to see every contestant in Pink if possible.

So I'm hoping we could have a link on the site for "Pink" listings, and maybe have the ladies who are talking to the committees for ground assignments ask, and help pass the word. What do you think? Can we all help to paint the circuit pink!

Dear Fellow Barrel Racers:

After talking with a committee member at a recent rodeo, I thought I would share a few thoughts.  The committees work real hard to put on a show & hopefully make some money.  It seems that making money has gotten harder to do & we need to take note of that.  Whatever we can do to help them out & keep them happy is something we all need to do. If they put in all the work & it rains, they are just as unhappy as we are.

No one in the stands=no money to pay for a rodeo the next year.

Some of the items that came up was that some times “The barrel racers don't seem to friendly,” so maybe a smile & a thank you can help that.  Complaining about the ground or other things has to be done with kid gloves, even then someone may take it wrong and not want to bother with “the barrel racers.”

The other thing that came up was having “Pop Up barrels” in the arena when everyone is trying to get in the arena & warm up.  Let's just say that guys are not “into that,” they don't get to bring out warm up calves or steers when we are trying to warm up.  Well they’re right---so for us “barrel racers,” we need to really be considerate to the other riders in the arena.

If we can just keep the above in mind, we may be able to help keep everyone a little happier us.

Just some thoughts
Donna Johnson
